Early
clubs and balls came by ship from the low countries and France, probably chiefly
from Holland. Extracts from local records show that golf was fairly established
in Aberdeen as early as the first half of the seventeenth century.
1888
was the year that The Aberdeen Golf Club migrated to Balgownie Links. Many changes
occurred in the first 15 years at Balgownie under the experienced care of Archie
Simpson, the club's popular Professional.
Tradition
continues to exert its mellowing influence on the affairs of the club, with
membership by invitation and visitors by advance arrangement. Top amateur events
are a regular occurrence on the club's fixture list.
In
the clubhouse are many reminders of a bygone golfing age. The captain's chair
is situated in the attractive lounge which provides a striking view over the
course and across the Bay of Aberdeen.
Founded
in 1780, Royal Aberdeen is the sixth oldest golf club in the world. For the
first thirty five years of its existence the club was known as The Society of
Golfers at Aberdeen, with members of the society being determined by ballot.
